ThisTuesdaymarksthefirstaiversaryofKatrina--oneofthedeadliestandmostcostlynaturaldisastersinAmericanhistory.InMiiii,thestormwipedoutvirtuallyeverythingalongan80-milestretchofthecoast,flatteninghomesanddestroyingentirecommunities.InLouisiana,floodingleft80percentofthecityofNewOrleaunderwater.Thehumancostswereevenmoreterrible.Morethanathousandpeopledied,countlefamilieslosttheirhomesandlivelihoods,andteofthousandsofmen,women,andchildrenwereforcedtofleetheregionandleavebehindeverythingtheyknew.

In1776,JohnAdamspredictedtohiswife,Abigail,thatAmerica’sIndependenceDaywouldbecelebratedbysucceedinggeneratioasthegreataiversaryfestival.Hewrotethat"thisaiversaryshouldbecommemoratedwithpompandparade,withshows,games,orts,bells,bonfires,andilluminatiofromoneendofthiscontinenttotheother,fromthistimeforward,forevermore."
