一方面，自学缺乏系统性的安排。在学校，教师会给学生制定学习计划，他们制定了学习目标，实现期望和进度的评估。有了这些，学生就会知道他们的不足，慢慢进步。然而自学者可能自我迷失，他们没有测试，没有作业和没有考试，很难知道如何提高。
